DESCRIPTION: EPW - John Roger Arnold, London, fusee pocket chronometer with spring detent escapement and helical hairspring, 52mm, silver OF consular case bearing London hallmarks for 1861, incuse "P W" marking for casemaker Phillip Woodman & Sons, beautifully engine turned and engraved fixed cuvette, white enamel dial, KWKS, spring detent escapement with exposed detent in channel of plate, Z balance with helical steel hairspring of about 6 turns, diamond endstone, gilt mvt with engraved balance cock having grotesque mask at its neck, s#2042. Per the dating of nearby serial numbers in Vaudrey Mercer's "John Arnold & Son," it appears that the movement is of 1807 to 1808 vintage, and we believe the case of 1861 vintage was likely purpose-made for this movement presumably to replace a damaged or lost original.
CONDITION: Mvt: Running, excellent cosmetic mvt condition overall, some typical scattered fine to micro-fine scratches; dial with some perimeter hls between 9 and 12, very small perimeter hl at 5:30, some scattered fine scratches; excellent hands; case shows little wear, very slight denting above center rear evident primarily as ripple to reflection of inner lid surface, good engine turning detail with mild reduction at shoulder; tight bow; good glass bull's-eye crystal.
ESTIMATE: $2000 - $3600
